Sikkim is home to almost 200 monasteries or Gompas belonging to the Nyingma and Kagyu sect. Some monasteries like the Dubdi monastery in west Sikkim is considered the oldest monastery having been built in 1705. It is also home to some exotic orchids. It is said Sikkim has more than 6000 species of orchids.
A former royal kingdom, Sikkim has had a turbulent past owing to incessant raids and annexation threats from nearby kingdoms. Sikkim’s Coronation Book describes Guru Tashi (descendants of the Mi-nyak House of Kham in Eastern Tibetas) as the first ruler of Sikkim. Yet, it was not before 1642 AD, when Sikkim got its first Chogyal (king) Phuntsog Namgyal (the fifth generation descendant of the Mi-nyak house), who consolidated the fragmented territories. This event was preordained by the Buddhist sage Rinpoche, who had come to the region to spread Buddhism.

Imagine immersing yourself in Sikkimese culture with Bhaichung Bhutia, India’s first international footballer. Sounds like a dream – a dream that can actually come true because Bhutia now runs a charming homestay in Tinkitam, South Sikkim.
The farmlands of Tinkitam is where Bhutia was born and raised and learnt football. And his homestay is the closest you will get to a local Sikkimese home. If you are from a big city and planning a holiday in this North-eastern state, chances are that organic farming is close to your heart. At Bhutia’s homestay in Tinkitam, you will get the unique opportunity to get up close to nature - working the fields with a traditional plough, collecting eggs from the chicken coop, milking the cows and then, after a hard day’s work, eating delicious hearty home-cooked food made from the farm’s fresh organic produce. Most important of all, you will have the unique opportunity to learn about nature’s bounty from the “gurus” who have worked the land for generations. Described as the “gurubas’ homestay, this is eco-tourism in the truest sense of the term where you learn about conserving the environment, even as you empower the local communities by staying with them and understanding what it takes to work the land while also protecting it. This is Bhaichung Bhutia’s commendable effort to give back to the state that has nurtured him.
The homestay was constructed in 2000. It has three bedrooms that can house six persons at a time on a twin-sharing basis. All rooms have modern bath fittings and other upgraded amenities.
Perhaps the most charming experience of staying at the Tinkitam homestay is that you will get to be with Bhutia’s mother and eat the food she lovingly cooks for you. Watch her, or better still work with her, as she tends the garden and oversees the upkeep of the cows and the chicken. Apart from milk from the cows, cheese - a central ingredient in many of the local dishes – is also made here. If you are a football fan, play a game on the field where the former Indian football captain first learned the sport. There are also nature walks and small hiking trips that can be organized to experience Sikkim’s stunning undulating terrain.

The property is a scenic two and a half hour (approximately) drives from the Gangtok.
In a quiet hamlet called Pangthang, about 8 kms away from Sikkim’s capital city of Gangtok is The Eagles Nest. Spread over three-acres of beautifully maintained land, this is Indian football legend, Baichung Bhutia’s home – a home that he has opened up for tourists to experience the all-encompassing hospitality of the Sikkimese people and the rich biodiversity of this beautiful north-eastern state. This is a cosy home that’s perfect for the nature lover, sports enthusiast, trekker or just someone who’s run away from the noise and pollution of a city and wants to enjoy the wonders of Mother Earth. Pangthang is the nesting ground for the steppe eagle and if you are lucky to be staying at The Eagles Nest between March and April or, September to November, you are likely to spot these majestic birds. The Eagles Nest is fitted with not just modern amenities but it oozes with lots of warmth for a memorable stay.

With ample open spaces, visitors can enjoy the view of the surrounding forests and mountains while sipping on a hot cup of home-grown Temi tea.

While the local fare consists of rice, meat and greens, the in-house cook can also whip up basic western food if a tourist so desires.

The winding road with a picturesque backdrop leads one to Summit Norling Resort & Spa, a four-star luxury resort, which is situated at the head of a secluded valley on the North of Gangtok city. The three-acre resort allows one to enjoy the best of Sikkimese hospitality – there are lush green lawns, a meditative pathway with a peaceful sound of the waterfall inside the resort, haiku-like bamboo grove and nibbling fish in the pond. The subtle design of the resort brings the outdoors in, inviting you to unwind and soak up the peace and quiet of the tranquil location.
“Sikkim at its finest” is how Summit Norling’s experience can – and should – be described. The staff is warm, helpful and generous and happy to create informal itineraries should guests want suggestions to explore Gangtok. The pristine environs of Gangtok allow outdoor activities to be experienced, something that the resort can organise easily for guests. Here’s a resort where prestigious luxury accommodation meets exemplary service and cuisine in the context of a perfect setting to simply relax, indulge and rejuvenate; a place where guests receive the warmest welcome and indulge wholeheartedly in the sense of occasion presented by lavish surroundings.
From the four Chalet rooms that are ideal for a romantic weekend getaway through to the self-contained seventeen premium rooms, Summit Norling has everything for the discerning traveller. Each Chalet room retains architectural features and gives a 180-degree panoramic view of the beautiful valley from the private balcony. The premium rooms are elegantly appointed with refined and sophisticated furniture that are spacious and comfortable ensuring a tasteful experience for guests even as they relax and unwind here. The Chalet rooms, with their warm and earthy tones, are inviting and so comfortable, and the interiors done in fine wood, offer picturesque valley views. The Chalet rooms offer en-suite bathrooms as well, which are equipped with premium quality personal care products.
The multi-cuisine restaurant at the resort is called Tsomgo, which means ‘source of the water’ in local dialect. It is also the name of a lake that is 38 km from Gangtok. The lake, for the record, is associated with many myths and legends, and revered by the Sikkimese as sacred. The resort’s dining experience, it wouldn’t be incorrect to say, is nothing short of sublime and sacred. The restaurant serves a wide section of cuisine, appetising, tasty, wholesome and hearty. The Northeastern cuisine is diverse and Sikkimese cuisine is considered topnotch in terms of quality and taste. You can sample a wide variety of local cuisine at Tsomgo.
The resort organises fun evenings for guests by way of bonfires, barbeque evenings and games to allow guests to unwind. For those who are health conscious, there’s a well-equipped gym that overlooks the green expanse. It’s a subliminal experience especially for those of us who hit the neighbourhood gyms that are boxed, claustrophobic and chaotic. Gangtok, on its own, is thoroughly charming and full of grace. The fine architecture of Rumtek monastery, one of the largest in Sikkim, which closely resembles the original 12th century one in Tibet, is an invitation to the spiritual even as Ganesh Tok, a temple devoted to the elephant-god, its path hoisted with Buddhist flags, is a lesson in oneness. Tourists don’t miss places of interest, such as Nathula Pass, Tsomgo Lake, Temi Tea Garden, Hanuman Tok, Tashi View Point, Banjhakri Waterfall, MG Marg and Do DrulChorten. You shouldn’t too!
